ORAL DISEASES
inflamed gums
Infected gums can be caused by a number of things, such as:
- insufficient or incorrect oral hygiene
- unhealthy practices such as smoking and excessive use of alcohol
- poor and one-sided nutrition
- certain diseases and medication
Infected gums will easily bleed when you brush your teeth and look red and swollen. If an infection of the gums (gingivitis) is not recognised and treated in a timely manner it can advance to periodontitis (infection and loss of the supporting tissue of the teeth and molars).
This can cause your teeth and molars to become loose and even fall out in time. The condition of your gums also affects the general physical health.
People with periodontitis have a higher risk of developing heart disease than people with healthy gums. The risk of developing infections elsewhere in the body also increases. Scientific studies have clearly demonstrated this.
Thus it is wise to come see us if your gingivitis persists in order to prevent worse.
