If tooth tissue has been affected by caries (cavities), it is necessary to remove the decayed tissue and to fill the resulting cavity with a filling material such as composite, porcelain or gold. That way the process is halted and the unnecessary loss of teeth and molars due to advanced caries is prevented.

It is sometimes advisable to replace amalgam fillings with white fillings such as composite fillings. Composite fillings are a mixture of glass or quartz powder in a synthetic resin medium with a colour similar to that of the tooth.
